Festival Special 4: Design Festa Vol. 28

Thanks to my Taiwanese classmate, Janette, I got to know of a big design festival in town. And when I went there, it turned out to be a doujin (independent) art exhibition! You know how much I love doujin culture, don't you? ;)

So Daim and I went straight to Tokyo Big Sight that day (long time ago :P blame WoW for that).

You know this place, don't you otaku? XD It has been housing the super delicious Comiket, a bi-annual doujin manga fair! That's a little hint for Festival Special 6 post! Where I'm standing in the pic is where a WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE will be queueing up, among them an otaku girl giving instructions to two poor twin girls.

If you understood what I just said, you're a certified otaku. 'Grats.

Met this rapper on the street. Check out his cool graffiti, yo.

We just never fail to use other people's work for our own jokes.

Greeting us at the entrance was Wadano-san's booth, full of cheery pastel illustrations. As with the other booths, you can buy these great works of art at a very cheap price. See, that's why I love doujin culture! You can check out her works @ http://www.xmegx.com.

Next is Terasaki-san's booth. She's good at drawing cute character art, creating accessories and telling... strange stories...

... like this one. This human was about to kill a pig, but the pig suggested to find a bigger animal and share. The human and pig then found a cow, in which the cow suggested to find a bigger animal. This went on with the elephant and they reached an apple tree.

At the end, the human killed everyone and ate everything. If you carefully analyse the illustration above, he didn't even finish a fraction of the apples. Seriously, what a greedy bastard!

Easily the most unique booth in the whole exhibition. This innocent looking lady actually takes pictures of herself naked and showing erotic poses. My blog is safe for all ages (i guess not anymore?) so the picture above is a mere "softcore" perspective of the entire booth.

In one picture, though not explicitly shown, had a banana up her ass. All that while eating another banana, in a seductive pose no less. Now THAT'S art!

Nabeya-san had a lot of reason to show this illustration in front of her booth on an easel. It looked gorgeous, esp. since it's hand-made with oil paint! Check out more of her works at http://ip.tosp.co.jp/i.asp?i=dressmash.

Hahahahahaha I like this guy! Uhbee-san would have someone (sometimes himself) put both feet up on the wall, then for that split second before he falls down, the camera would click. In one picture above, you can see the guy eating ramen on the wall XD These photos are aptly named Spidermanplay.

Check out his simple but superb flash site @ http://www.spidermanplay.com.

Softbank had this wonderful Wacom screens on display for some competition thingy, where anyone could submit a drawing. Anyone except me that is :P

Sometimes surrounded by people who don't understand you has its advantages.

Ah, what's a design festa in Tokyo without cutesy isometric modern illustration right? Meet Funppy-san. What's amazing is that this guy works alone! And the city behind him was so breath-taking! So professionally done with a spectacular mix of shapes and colours.

Both of us lined up for 30 minutes to have us drawn, Funppy-style! It was free, and we could select one out of the MANY (I think around 200+?) business cards they had, all of them with different illustrations! Man, imagine the printing cost.

Now you know why he's called Funppy. Visit him @ http://www.funppy.com.

What would YOU have done with a bunch of unused umbrellas?

Japanese nationalism and political mockery. Only a man of age like Kitamura-san could understand! And he expressed them well too, with beautiful oil-painted surreal imagery. I especially liked the one in the bottom-right.

Daim: "Hazmer, you go ahead first la. I have some 'art research' to do."

Otaku keyword 101: Zettai Ryouiki.

Girls definitely have the upper advantage in this fair, coz there are so many cute stuff up for grabs! Depends on how you look at it I guess, at least the guy's wallet is relatively safer.

Suddenly, I have the urge to go to The Curve.

I love these! Drawing it on wood gives a whole different feel to the characters, doesn't it? As a result, they look more traditional and mild-coloured, but the artist still applies some modern touches like the pose, the dress, etc.

Iwai-san is the genius behind what she calls "Fundoshi Fantasy". More of her works @ http://ugyau.easter.ne.jp.

I guess I'll be seeing her at Comiket as well.

Oh dear...

Bought a few nice badges from Birdie. It was nice meeting him here, of all places.

Well how about that eh? Two guys singing and playing guitar (really well!) while the girl creates the accessories. Memang art fest man!

This booth had all these pretty illustrations of girls with expressions that made you wish they were your girlfriend. I bought the 3rd one in top row for Janette coz she really looks like her.

... Eh wait, Janette, don't misunderstand! That's not a confession ok! :P

Some amazing Sumi-e works of people in fighting poses.

Though we had little time left, we managed to check out this guy finishing up one of his works. Such vibrant colours! Wonder if he does stained glass art?

This is Ayu-chan's booth.

If you understood this one as well, then you're a high-level otaku. 'Grats again.

At the very last minute, we stumbled upon Cocoro's booth. And thank god for that! This guy is amazing! He creates beautiful illustrations of characters and cities in a semi-fairy-tale semi-European setting. He really knows how to utilize his skill and sell them, making all sorts of stuff, from pop-up greeting cards to bookmarks to posters!

Seriously, just look at this.

Totally speechless, man. Please do check out his works @ http://atelier-coco.com.

And with that, the design festa comes to an end.

But the artist never sleeps!

It was overwhelming to be basked by such great talents all around you. Malaysia should have something like this in the future, once the government realizes the importance of modern art, that is :P When will that happen, I wonder...

Anyways, see you in Festival Special 5!

You should regret not taking picture with that innocent lady with the nude pictures.

She's Yuka Osawa, a famous pornstar. I didn't know that she does nude art as well.
